COMM 495: Reflection Post

Bristen Broy

When I initially set up my Wix account, I was surprised at how easy it was to select and modify different layouts and cater them to my own preferences. That being said, one of the most challenging parts that I am still struggling with today is formatting the site to correctly display when viewed on a mobile phone. It is very difficult to adjust the layouts to fit in such a small space. Even the slightest adjustment alters the entire page, so this is something that I will definitely have to keep practicing. I also struggled with adding the PDF viewer for my course projects, as it sometimes doesn't appear when I open my ePortfolio.

CMC stands for computer-mediated communication. It refers to any type of communication between humans that specifically uses computer technology as a medium. CMC plays an extremely important role in both my professional and personal life. Most instances of communication in both of these areas are achieved through CMC apps and technologies. As a distance learning student who is in the process of completing their entire degree online, CMC has played an integral role in helping me to communicate with advisors, professors, and classmates. Some of the apps and technologies that I use frequently to communicate in this professional area are:

  • Zoom

  • Gmail

  • Canvas Discussion Boards

  • GroupMe

CMC apps and technologies that I use in my personal life are much greater than those used in my professional life in regards to the time that I spend using them. In my personal life, I use CMC apps and technologies such as:

  • Snapchat

  • Texting

  • Reddit

  • Facebook Messenger

  • Facetime

  • Skype

With this curation assignment, I completely revamped my page’s theme and content. My page had not been updated since the fall of 2023, so its pre-curation state was not reflective of my current coursework and professional endeavors. For my home page, I updated my welcome message. I updated my “about me” section to reflect on my final semester as a college student and my hopes as an aspiring workplace professional. I also updated this area to express the gratitude that I have towards my professors for guiding and assisting me on my educational journey. For my course projects page, I updated it to reflect more recent coursework, carefully selecting ones that I feel best showcase my abilities as both a writer and researcher. Aside from the theme, I did not update anything on my resume, as I had recently updated that upon the completion of my spring 2024 internship. On my contact page, I added a link to my LinkedIn, as I have recently created an account for myself in anticipation of graduation and my entrance into the workforce. Overall, the changes that I made to my ePortfolio have turned this site into a valuable asset that uniformly and accurately reflects my experience as a Communication student and as a Media Studies major. I am extremely proud of the changes that I made, and I am very excited to share this site with potential employers.

I do not have any questions at this stage of the ePortfolio project.
